As I mentioned here, I started publishing the LogLogic Logging Glossary. So, here is the eleventh term (first second third fourth fifth sixth seventh eighth ninth tenth):
Log Preprocessing
1. The process of modifying or transforming a message as preparation for later stage processing.
Preprocessing can include multi-line message handling, encoding conversion, and special character substitution.
2. The prerequisite analysis of headers or other information in a log that define the formats or values present in the log messages.
The preprocessing assures correct parsing and identification of values.
