Logging Glossary: Alert

As I mentioned here,  I plan to start publishing the LogLogic Logging Glossary. So, here is the first term:

Alert

A message designed to raise awareness of a particular event or condition.

An alert may be recorded in a system log outside the product normal logging behavior. It may be sent to another system or displayed on a system console for immediate attention, or to communicate to another system that a monitored event has occurred.  An alert may be the normal message generated by the product, or it may a message designed to carry additional information not present in the log message. Alerts may have no detail content, intended only for notification that the event occurred.
